Learning to Be Happy
By: Jason Abong
It may not be possible to be happy all the time, but it’s certainly worth trying to achieve! Sometimes it can be a little stress that can cause unhappiness, but sometimes, it could be a little more serious, like losing your direction in life or reevaluating your relationships. Everyone experiences these sorts of dilemmas in their lives—you are not alone. It can be difficult to find what the correct answers are in certain situations, but one thing is for sure: we all want to be happy.
Fortunately, there are many ways to regain the happiness they seek in their lives. One way is to develop an internal locus of control. Optimists tend to be more happy than their counterparts, and part of it is a result of their internal locus of control—the feeling that you are in control of your fate as opposed to a victim. Those with an internal locus of control feel they have more power in their life because they believe that they have the power to fix whatever problems come in their way. These people experience less stress and feel freer. Those with an external locus of control feel powerless to the circumstances that come upon them and instead let these circumstances dictate who they are. These people may not feel motivated to move beyond their current situation since they feel that it is out of their control. As a result, these people feel more stressed while they have to deal with these situations over and over.
Another way to find happiness is changing the environment you are in. While this is certainly much easier said than done, making small changes in the environment can result in a big change in your outlook on life. People may not realize that it could be just one person or thing that could be causing their unhappiness and by moving that person or thing out of their life, their perspective on life could change drastically. Introducing yourself to a person you’ve seen many times at the same coffee shop could introduce new experiences in life, which in turn, can lead to a more satisfying and fulfilling life. Dropping a romantic relationship that may have been holding you back can lead to new experiences, as can adding a romantic relationship.
