The Briar Patch Inn- A Sedona Getaway

 By: Trina Becksted

With its red rocks and native charm, Sedona is known worldwide for its energy vortexes and elegant beauty. In Oak Creek Canyon, nestled along the lush banks of Oak Creek, is the Briar Patch Inn. It’s where I had the distinct pleasure of spending my birthday last week. Briar Patch Inn consists of 19 cabins set on 9 acres of a magical oasis that felt more like Shakespeare’s Fairyland than an Arizona Inn.

It was so quaint and whimsical that I expected to see forest nymphs dancing among the trees. Accommodations at this Northern Arizona getaway include cottages with private patios, fireplaces, breathtaking views and the soothing sound of Oak Creek as it flows through the canyon. Inside the cottages are furnished with Southwestern charm and Native American decor.

When I arrived at the Inn, already a bit buzzed by the natural beauty of my surroundings, I was greeted by Inn Keeper Laura who was well informed; she acquainted me with the property and its many amenities. I was placed in Sycamore cottage where the fireplace was already set up–all I had to do was light a match to enjoy a relaxing evening by the crackling fire. In the morning, I was offered a healthy breakfast of fresh home-baked breads and muffins, crunchy granola, quiche, yogurt, fresh fruits and juices, eggs in the shell, coffee and herbal tea.

The employees at the Briar Patch were all very helpful, accommodating and friendly. I was met by the lovely Inn Keeper Kaprice, a former Sedona tour guide, who had a plethora of information about the area. I also met manager Rob Olson who had rich tales and memories of this enchanting place. He is the son of owner JoAnn Olson. His parents bought the establishment more than 28 years ago. I learned a lot about Rob’s creatively accomplished mother who had a vision to make Briar Patch Inn what it is today. Briar Patch Inn

Rob’s wife just opened a new Thai restaurant nearby. JoAnn helped with the creation of the unique décor at this Sedona’s newest restaurant named Wild Orchid, a healthful Asian Fusion restaurant.

I was completely taken by the property, most of all by a sea of perfectly smooth grey stones that lay adjacent to the wild waters of Oak Creek. This natural rock farm was carved out by the raging waters of the Creek. The smooth obelisk stones were unlike I had seen before. I felt as if I had been transported into a different eon where nature’s creations were untouched.

Other than its rugged beauty, Briar Patch Inn offers a range of events and activities. In the summer months, it hosts Phoenix musicians Maryanne Kremer-Ames and Allen Ames, classical guitarist and violinist, who play creek side during breakfast. These talented musicians have honored Briar Patch with their presence each year since 1989 with strains of Bach, Vivaldi and sometimes a little jazz. Briar Patch Inn also offers a range of outdoor activities such as private swimming holes in the creek for guests who would like an exhilarating and refreshing experience.

For those who enjoy fishing, the creek is stocked with Rainbow Trout from May to September, joining the German Brown trout native to the area. Hiking trails also lure guests to this most breathtaking part of the country. True to the Sedona vortex, the Briar Patch Inn harvests a powerful energy making this a sacred experience. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend my birthday. Visit http://www.briarpatchinn.com for more information about Briar Patch Inn or call 888/809.3030.
